Seriake Dickson Says PDP Has Collapsed Amid Leadership Crisis

Former Bayelsa governor Seriake Dickson says PDP no longer exists in its original form due to internal crises and leadership failures

Former Seriake Dickson, ex-governor of Bayelsa State and current senator, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) no longer exists in its original form.

He attributed the party’s collapse to internal crises and leadership failure.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, Dickson lamented what he described as the destruction of one of Nigeria’s historically dominant political platforms.

“The PDP that I came to be part of has since been killed, has since been buried,” he said.

Dickson noted that the party, which produced former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, and Goodluck Jonathan, has lost its identity and no longer reflects the structure Nigerians once trusted with power.

He stressed that the ongoing crisis could have been avoided if party leaders had prioritized compromise and collective interests over personal ambition.

“People must agree to be reasonable and place the interest of the party and the country above personal ambition,” Dickson added.

The former governor also revealed that efforts to stabilise the PDP, including proposals for a caretaker arrangement and multiple reconciliation committees he chaired, were largely ignored.

“I have chaired reconciliation committees under different leaderships, so I know the weaknesses and strengths of the party. It won’t be correct to say that I left PDP. The PDP, unfortunately, has left us,” he said.

Dickson warned that the decline of the PDP represents a setback for Nigerian democracy, given its historical role as both a major opposition and ruling party.
