Shehu Sani Advises Jonathan Against 2027 Comeback Bid

Shehu Sani advises Jonathan not to run in 2027, warning that today’s PDP is too weak and fragmented to support his return. He also critiques new opposition blocs

Shehu Sani advises Jonathan not to contest in the 2027 presidential election, warning that Nigeria’s current political terrain is drastically different from what it was during the former president’s time in office.

The former Kaduna Central senator made the remarks during a live interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he addressed renewed speculation surrounding Goodluck Jonathan’s potential return to frontline politics.

“Each time there is an election, the name of Jonathan comes up. It is his volition to contest, but I advise him not to,” Sani said.

According to Sani, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—which brought Jonathan to power in 2011—has lost the cohesion and influence it once enjoyed.

“The PDP he used to know is not the PDP now,” he noted. “In the South-West, some PDP members are openly endorsing the current president, while others are part of the new opposition coalition. The party is fragmented.”

Sani’s comments come amid ongoing debate over power rotation, a possible one-term Southern presidency, and the emergence of a new political coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Sani didn’t stop at Jonathan. He also dismissed the credibility of the emerging opposition coalition, questioning its ideological direction and contrasting it unfavorably with President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“We are in a democracy, and it is their right to organise. But if their only mission is to remove Tinubu without offering a genuine alternative, then they have no agenda,” he said.

He described the coalition’s figures as lacking philosophical differences from Tinubu’s style of governance.

“They support the same policies—devaluation, subsidy removal—and that shows no ideological contrast. We’re not talking Marxist vs Capitalist here. It’s all one and the same.”

Sani, known for his bold political commentary, urged Jonathan to preserve his legacy rather than risk political irrelevance in a fragmented environment.
