Shinkafi ADC candidate status is confirmed by INEC as the electoral commission settles the party’s Zamfara governorship dispute ahead of 2027
Bilyaminu Aliyu Shinkafi, governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, was confirmed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as the party’s candidate for Zamfara State on Saturday, August 29, 2026, after his name appeared on the commission’s final list displayed at its state office in Gusau.

The confirmation appears to have brought an end to an internal dispute over who should represent the ADC in the 2027 governorship election.
The disagreement emerged after Surajo Garba Gusau, the ADC state chairman, announced Ibrahim Salisu Mafara as the party’s governorship candidate.
The competing claims over the ticket created uncertainty within the party as it prepared for the next election. INEC’s publication of Shinkafi’s name has now provided a formal indication of which candidate the commission recognises for the contest.
Shinkafi welcomed the development and praised INEC for what he described as adherence to due process and the rule of law.
“I commend INEC for doing the right thing. This is a victory for democracy and for the ADC family in Zamfara,” Shinkafi said.
He also appealed to members of the ADC and other stakeholders to put the dispute behind them and concentrate on building a stronger campaign structure ahead of the election.
“I call on all our members to embrace unity and progress so that we can deliver victory for the party in 2027,” he said.
The Shinkafi ADC candidate confirmation gives the party a clearer platform from which to begin its campaign preparations in Zamfara, although the underlying disagreement may still require political reconciliation within the party.
Shinkafi is now expected to face Governor Dauda Lawal of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as well as candidates from other political parties in what is likely to be a competitive governorship contest.
Lawal is seeking to retain control of Zamfara after winning the 2023 governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party before subsequently moving to the APC.
The 2027 contest will therefore involve not only competing personalities but also shifting party alliances and evolving political structures across the state.
For the ADC, resolving the question of its governorship candidate is an important first step. Internal cohesion will now be crucial if the party is to translate the INEC confirmation into an effective grassroots campaign.
The episode also highlights the importance of the formal nomination process in Nigeria’s electoral system, where disputes over party primaries and candidate lists can have significant consequences for political organisations and their supporters.
With Shinkafi’s name now appearing on INEC’s final list, the ADC can turn its attention towards mobilisation, policy messaging and voter engagement.
Whether the confirmation fully settles the internal disagreement will depend on how quickly the party’s competing interests reconcile and rally behind the candidate recognised by the electoral commission.
