Tinubu 2027 poll warning: US lobbying firm urges attention to electoral integrity in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election
Von Batten-Montague-York, a United States-based political advisory and lobbying firm, has issued a strong warning over Nigeria’s 2027 general election, saying the United States cannot afford to allow President Bola Tinubu to rig the poll.

The firm made the claim in a post on its verified X account on Thursday, arguing that a credible election in Nigeria is important to United States interests in the country and the wider region.
“The US cannot afford to allow President Tinubu to rig the upcoming Nigerian election,” the firm said.
Von Batten-Montague-York also alleged that there is growing agreement across Nigeria’s political divide that the government led by Tinubu represents a “bastion of corruption”.
The firm further criticised what it described as the appointment of an individual previously accused by the US Department of Justice of embezzling billions of dollars from Nigeria’s treasury to a position overseeing the country’s budget.
The firm did not provide supporting documentation for those claims in its latest statement.
The intervention comes as political activity surrounding Nigeria’s 2027 election intensifies, with Tinubu expected to seek another term and opposition politicians positioning themselves ahead of the contest.
However, the statement from Von Batten-Montague-York should not be interpreted as an official position of the United States government.
The Washington-based organisation is a private lobbying and political advisory firm. US Department of Justice records show that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar engaged the firm under a 12-month government affairs and strategic advisory agreement worth $1.2 million.
The agreement became effective in February 2026 and was registered under the Foreign Agents Registration Act in April.
The filing states that the firm would provide government affairs representation and strategic advisory services in the United States, including political and policy engagement on Atiku’s behalf.
That relationship provides important context for the firm’s latest comments because Atiku remains an active political figure ahead of the 2027 election and was Tinubu’s principal challenger in the 2023 presidential contest.
The firm has previously made similarly strong claims about Nigeria’s political environment.
Earlier in September, it alleged that Tinubu’s administration was using state institutions to undermine opposition parties and candidates.
Those allegations were made by the firm and have not been established as findings by the United States government.
The Nigerian presidency has also previously challenged attempts to present the firm’s statements as reflecting Washington’s official position.
Presidential adviser Sunday Dare described Von Batten-Montague-York as a commercial lobbying firm rather than an arm of the US government.
He also pointed to the firm’s agreement with Atiku when questioning its political neutrality.
The distinction is important. A private lobbying firm’s assessment of Nigerian politics does not establish that the US government shares the same position or intends to intervene in Nigeria’s electoral process.
The United States has nevertheless maintained a longstanding interest in democratic governance and credible elections in Nigeria.
That broader diplomatic position is separate from the latest statement by Von Batten-Montague-York.
For Nigeria, the 2027 election is expected to attract considerable domestic and international attention as political parties prepare for another major contest.

The latest statement from the US firm adds another layer to the debate, but its allegations about election rigging and corruption remain claims by the organisation and should be distinguished from established facts or official US policy.
