In a statement released on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, in Abuja, Obi warned that plans to disconnect the Presidential Villa from the national grid send the wrong signal about governance and accountability.
Obi highlighted that Tinubu’s campaign promise to deliver steady electricity within four years has yet to materialise.
“Thirty-two months after being in charge and instead of living by his powerful words, he now dumps the National Grid that has been performing abysmally under his watch,” Obi wrote on his official X handle.
The former Anambra State governor raised concerns over the Federal Government’s N10 billion solar mini-grid project for Aso Rock, describing it as a shift towards renewable energy that underscores a lack of confidence in the national grid.
He argued that government institutions should lead by example to strengthen the power system for ordinary Nigerians.
Obi acknowledged the value of renewable energy initiatives but insisted that leadership must remain accountable to citizens’ daily challenges.
“You cannot tell the people to fast while feasting yourself, securing yourself while Nigerians remain unsecured,” he wrote.
The statement follows growing public scrutiny of Nigeria’s electricity sector, where intermittent supply has disrupted households and businesses.

Obi’s remarks emphasise the human impact of energy instability and the need for transparent governance in the sector.
