Tinubu Honours Awujale’s Legacy, Recalls Prophetic Blessing, Unity Call

Tinubu honours Awujale’s legacy, revealing the late monarch’s blessing of his 2023 victory and re-election prophecy, urging unity and cultural pride in Ijebuland

Speaking at the 8th-day Fidau prayer at Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu-Ode, Tinubu recounted his emotional visit to the monarch before the polls.

“I came to him and he blessed me,” the president said. “He said, ‘You will win that election and you will be re-elected. Go ahead.’”

The president said those words became a source of strength and confidence on his path to Aso Rock.

He praised the Awujale’s courage, truthfulness, and unwavering support for democracy.

Tinubu noted that Oba Adetona played a crucial role during the struggle for democratic freedom, particularly during the June 12 crisis.

“During our protests and resistance against the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Baba was always there—steadfast and encouraging,” Tinubu added.

He said Oba Adetona represented more than royalty—he embodied the very essence of Yoruba culture, dignity, and wisdom.

“Today marks a very great day in the history of our nation, and particularly the Yoruba race. If you want to understand our culture deeply, start from Awujale. You will learn a lot,” he said.

Oba Adetona, who died recently at 90, had earlier been honoured with the national title of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), a testament to his lifelong service to Nigeria.

President Tinubu earlier visited the late monarch’s residence privately to condole with the family and laid a wreath at his grave.

He then urged Ijebu people and political leaders to preserve the monarch’s values.

“Kabiyesi was more than a monarch; he was a beacon of hope and a custodian of our culture. We must cherish his legacy and allow the spirit of unity he left behind to guide us,” he said.

The Fidau prayer drew a diverse crowd of dignitaries, including First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu; Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State; Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq; and former Ogun Governor Olusegun Osoba.

Also present were ministers Wale Edun, Festus Keyamo, Dele Alake, and Bosun Tijani; Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele; Senators Solomon Adeola and Seriake Dickson; Deputy Chief Whip Ibrahim Isiaka and Rep. Olumide Osoba.

Religious leaders, traditional rulers and members of the Ijebu community came in large numbers.

Before the stadium event, both Islamic and Christian clerics offered prayers at the monarch’s home.

Governor Abiodun praised the late monarch as a beacon of justice. “Kabiyesi was not just a ruler; he was a mentor. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come,” he said.
