Umeh urges Atiku 2027 step down as senator calls on former vice president to allow younger candidate emerge in ADC presidential race

The statement was made on Monday during an interview on Prime Time, an Arise Television programme focused on political developments ahead of the next general elections.

Victor Umeh acknowledged Atiku Abubakar’s long-standing role in Nigerian politics but stressed that it is time for generational transition within the party.

He noted that Atiku has contested presidential elections since 2003 and suggested that continued participation may limit opportunities for younger politicians.

According to him, emerging leaders within the ADC are bringing fresh ideas that could better address the expectations of Nigerians seeking change.

Umeh referenced Atiku’s reported remarks that the 2027 election may be his final attempt, but expressed concern that repeated ambition could discourage internal party renewal.

He warned that failure to promote younger candidates could trigger internal divisions and weaken the party’s electoral strength.

The senator further argued that healthy political succession is necessary for long-term party stability and national development.
