FCT Minister Wike Rules Out ADC Success, Endorses Tinubu-Aligned Candidates

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike rules out ADC chances in 2027 elections, criticises PDP errors, and vows to support candidates aligned with President Tinubu

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has stated that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will not succeed in next year’s elections.

Speaking during his first live media chat of the year at his Abuja residence, Wike criticised ADC leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and former Anambra Governor Peter Obi, for engaging in populist gestures aimed at deceiving the public.

Wike mocked Amaechi for publicly eating roasted corn during campaigns and questioned Obi’s sincerity in visiting IDP camps for his birthday.

He described such acts as “staged compassion” rather than genuine leadership.

The minister also predicted that Ireti Kingibe, who recently defected from the Labour Party to ADC, will not be re-elected in the 2027 FCT senatorial race.

Reflecting on the recent FCT council polls, where the All Progressives Congress (APC) won five councils and the PDP one, Wike said ADC’s lack of preparation contributed to its poor showing.

He defended his movement during polling, emphasising that his oversight did not influence the results.

Wike stressed that he would only back candidates who support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid, regardless of party affiliation.

He said: “I never said I would support that particular party, but I did say I would support candidates who are in favour of the President, regardless of which party they are from.”

The minister clarified that this stance should not be seen as anti-party action, insisting his focus is on individuals aligned with Tinubu’s vision for the country.

Wike compared elections to academic exams, stressing that parties must prepare adequately to succeed.

He noted strong voter turnout in rural areas where the FCT Administration invested in infrastructure, contrasting it with low urban participation.

He defended his role as Chief Security Officer during polling, stating he had the right to monitor security at over 3,000 polling units.

Wike hinted at plans to conduct “thank you visits” to FCT area councils to appreciate voters’ support.

He concluded: “Agreement is agreement; if you do for me, I do for you…our part is to provide infrastructure as we promised.”
