Wike Calls Peter Obi’s Modesty ‘Fake’ Ahead of 2027

Nyesom Wike has described Peter Obi’s public display of modesty as fake, accusing the NDC presidential candidate of seeking votes ahead of 2027

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed Peter Obi’s recent display of modesty as “fake”, accusing the former Anambra State governor of using public gestures such as visiting IDP camps and buying roadside corn to gain political support ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Wike made the remark on Tuesday while addressing Rivers State youths during an engagement ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The FCT minister questioned Obi’s recent public gestures, including celebrating birthdays at Internally Displaced Persons camps and buying roasted corn by the roadside.

Wike argued that Obi did not demonstrate the same form of modesty during his eight years as governor of Anambra State.

According to him, the former governor’s recent public appearances were part of a political strategy designed to appeal to voters ahead of the next presidential election.

Wike said Obi should be made “the president of social media” if Nigerians were impressed by such activities.

“Make him the president of social media so that he can be going to IDP camps, so that he will be buying corn on the road then you will say, ‘Oh! Very humble.’ Humble where?” Wike said.

He added, “It’s fake. Who are you going to deceive? When you were a governor, you didn’t go to the IDP camp to do your birthday, you didn’t go to buy fuel by yourself, all of a sudden, just because you want to be president you are now going. Who are you going to deceive?”

Wike’s comments come as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with major political figures and prospective candidates increasingly using public engagements to promote their records and political messages.

Obi, who governed Anambra State from 2006 to 2013, was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election and has since remained an influential figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics.

The former governor has frequently presented himself as a politician committed to frugality, accountability and close engagement with ordinary Nigerians.

Wike’s latest criticism represents another political attack on Obi as parties and political groups position themselves ahead of the 2027 contest.
