Abba Atiku Joins APC Amid 2027 Political Speculation

Abba Atiku’s defection to APC sparks debate ahead of 2027 elections, but analysts say it may have limited political impact

Abba Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a move generating reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape.

The reception ceremony took place at the National Assembly, where Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and other northern APC leaders welcomed him.

“My name is Abubakar Atiku Abubakar, but everyone calls me Abba. I am here today to formally announce my exit from my former party and my decision to join the APC,” Abba stated during the announcement.

The defection comes amid speculation over Atiku Abubakar’s own political plans, with reports suggesting he may seek the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Analysts, however, insist that Abba’s move is unlikely to affect his father’s standing.

Atiku Abubakar, commenting on the development via his official X account, described the defection as a personal choice.

“The decision of my son, Abba Abubakar, to join the APC is entirely personal. In a democracy, such choices are neither unusual nor alarming,” he said, affirming his commitment to democratic principles.

ADC officials also downplayed the political significance of Abba’s defection.

Comrade Aliyu Haidar, Director-General of ADC Media Vanguard, said that media coverage amplified the event, while Abba himself lacked sufficient political influence to sway voter behaviour.

Political analysts have echoed similar views.

Professor Kamiku Sani Fagge, a Professor of Political Science, said, “Abba Atiku’s defection to the APC will not have any serious impact. Voters usually do not pay attention to this kind of issue. It is mainly politicians and the media that exaggerate such matters.”

Attention is now turning to whether Abba’s decision will yield tangible benefits for the APC in the 2027 general elections or fade without consequence.

Some observers argue that his rejection of the ADC could be interpreted as a lack of confidence in Atiku Abubakar’s ability to secure the presidency.
