ADC Faction Suspends Atiku Abubakar in Shocking Party Crisis

ADC Suspends Atiku Abubakar Adamawa as a factional group announces suspension of Atiku and Babachir Lawal amid escalating party crisis

A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State, led by chairman Raji Sulaiman Zumo, on Monday announced the suspension of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, in a development that has further intensified the internal crisis within the opposition party.

The faction also confirmed the suspension of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, stating that both decisions were taken under the authority of its state leadership structure.

Zumo disclosed the decision while addressing party stakeholders, insisting that the move was in line with internal disciplinary procedures adopted by the faction in Adamawa State.

The announcement comes amid an ongoing leadership dispute at the national level of the ADC, where rival groups are laying claim to control of the party’s structure.

A separate faction led by Nafiu Bala Gombe has also declared itself the legitimate national leadership of the party, resulting in parallel administrations and deepening confusion over the party’s official hierarchy.

The crisis has been further complicated by reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has withdrawn recognition from a leadership bloc associated with former Senate President David Mark, adding another layer of uncertainty to the party’s internal structure.

Political observers say the suspension of high-profile figures such as Atiku Abubakar and Babachir Lawal underscores the widening divisions within the ADC, particularly in Adamawa State, which remains a key political base for the party.
