Yunusa Yakasai says Atiku Abubakar could anoint Peter Obi to fly ADC’s flag in the 2027 election, highlighting strategic opposition dynamics
Yunusa Tanko Yakasai, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, has suggested that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar could support and “anoint” Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to contest the 2027 general election under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Yakasai addressed speculation over the ADC’s 2027 presidential ticket and the potential influence of key opposition figures ahead of the polls.
Asked about the possibility of Atiku preventing Obi from securing the ADC ticket, Yakasai described the former Vice President as a “leader and father” who would not partake in divisive manoeuvres.
“Atiku Abubakar is a leader, he is a father. He will not even join in that shenanigan,” he said.
Yakasai added that while Atiku has the right to contest the party ticket, he also has the option to endorse another candidate.
“Winning does not mean I have to be the one, winning can be me taking you and say go and win for us, I know you are capable. It is possible,” he noted.
The comments come amid growing discussions within opposition circles regarding Obi’s potential 2027 candidacy, as supporters continue urging party leaders to back him for the presidential race.
Meanwhile, the ADC has warned members and supporters against rhetoric that could divide the party.
