Ramadan Caused Poor FCT Poll Turnout, Says Bashir Ahmad

Bashir Ahmad criticises Ramadan election timing, saying it reduced voter turnout in FCT polls and urging INEC to review 2027 dates

Bashir Ahmad, former Special Assistant on Digital Communications to late President Muhammadu Buhari, has publicly criticised Ramadan election timing, stating that the scheduling of the recent Federal Capital Territory council polls during the holy month significantly reduced voter turnout.

Bashir Ahmad said the low participation recorded across several polling units was largely influenced by the altered routines of Muslim voters observing the fast.

Bashir Ahmad explained that many residents limited movement during daylight hours and prioritised prayers and spiritual commitments.

Bashir Ahmad noted that the experience had prompted calls from stakeholders for the Independent National Electoral Commission to reassess dates already fixed for the 2027 general elections.

The governorship and State and National Assembly elections are currently scheduled just two days before Eid el Fitr.

Bashir Ahmad warned that the period leading to Eid is often intense, with families travelling, markets experiencing heightened activity, and communities preparing for celebrations.

According to Bashir Ahmad, these factors could further discourage turnout if not carefully considered.

While stressing that voting remains a civic responsibility regardless of timing, Bashir Ahmad argued that aligning election dates with social realities would strengthen inclusiveness and democratic participation.

Posting on X, Bashir Ahmad described the situation as a serious lesson for electoral planners.

Bashir Ahmad urged INEC to undertake a thoughtful review to avoid what he termed avoidable voter apathy in future polls.

The remarks add to ongoing debate over whether religious observances should influence Nigeria’s electoral calendar, as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gather momentum.
