Dumebi Ifeanyi Defects to APC, Strengthening Uzodimma’s Political Foothold

Dumebi Ifeanyi defects to APC, delivering a major political boost to Governor Uzodimma and weakening PDP’s influence in Aboh Mbaise and Ngor Okpala

Scenes of jubilation erupted across Aboh Mbaise and Ngor Okpala Federal Constituency on Tuesday as Comrade Ifeanyichukwu Chukwudumebi, popularly known as Dumebi Ifeanyi, a former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairmanship candidate, formally defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The move marks a significant political victory for Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration and a devastating blow to the opposition.

The defection, which had been the subject of speculation for weeks, was confirmed amid celebrations by APC supporters who thronged the streets of Aboh Mbaise, chanting slogans and praising Dumebi Ifeanyi and Governor Uzodimma’s leadership.

Dumebi, a communications expert, media strategist, youth mobiliser, and entrepreneur who built much of his political career in Abuja, is widely regarded as one of the most formidable political operatives from the constituency in recent years.

Analysts describe his transition as a defining moment in Imo State’s political realignment.

“This is not just a defection. This is a statement,” said a senior APC chieftain during the reception in Dumebi’s honour.

“Dumebi brings with him a coalition of youth, grassroots networks, and media firepower that money cannot easily buy. Governor Uzodimma has just acquired a formidable asset.”

Within PDP ranks, the mood was markedly different. Senior party figures in the constituency are reportedly reeling from the departure of a man considered one of the party’s strongest pillars at the national level.

Dumebi had played a pivotal role in internal party struggles, working alongside allies loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike in efforts to reclaim PDP control from governors accused of hijacking the party machinery.

Political analysts warn that Dumebi’s exit could trigger a wider wave of defections from the PDP, particularly among youth groups and grassroots members who have worked closely with him.

“When a figure of his stature moves, others follow,” said a political scientist at a federal university in Owerri who requested anonymity.

“What we are witnessing in Aboh Mbaise is the beginning of a domino effect. The opposition cannot afford to lose communicators and mobilisers of this calibre, and they know it.”

For Governor Uzodimma, Dumebi Ifeanyi’s defection consolidates APC’s influence in a constituency that had shown mixed support for his administration.

Political observers note the broader significance of the development not only as a gain for the APC but as a signal of shifting power dynamics in Imo State ahead of the next electoral cycle.
