El-Rufai mother burial in Abuja draws Atiku, Peter Obi, Ribadu and other top politicians across parties in a show of unity and condolence
Prominent Nigerian politicians from across party lines gathered on Sunday in Abuja for the funeral prayers of Hajia Umma, the mother of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, following her passing in Cairo, Egypt on Friday, March 27, 2026.

The El-Rufai mother burial drew a wide array of dignitaries to the National Mosque in Abuja, where the funeral prayers were held before the interment at Gudu Cemetery later the same day.
The solemn event became a moment of unity as leaders from the ruling and opposition parties paid their respects.
Among those in attendance were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, alongside several serving and former governors and ministers.
The gathering also included Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, Governor Umar Bago, and former Sokoto State Governor Senator Aminu Tambuwal.
Other notable attendees included former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Isa Ali Pantami, former Minister of Aviation Osita Chidoka, and former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani.
Hajia Umma passed away while in Cairo, prompting widespread condolences from political leaders, public figures and citizens across Nigeria.
The news triggered an outpouring of sympathy messages, reflecting her family’s prominence in national politics.
The El-Rufai mother burial also highlighted a rare moment of cross-party solidarity, as figures from the All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party and African Democratic Congress set aside political differences to honour the deceased.
The former governor had recently been released from custody following his mother’s death, a development that further drew public attention to the family’s circumstances during the period of mourning.
