Kano NNPP Leaders Meet NDC Governorship Candidate Ahead of 2027

Kano NNPP Leaders Meet NDC Governorship Candidate Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, sparking fresh talks of a possible 2027 alliance

Leaders of the New Nigerian Peoples Party in Kano State, led by State Chairman Dr Hashim Suleiman Dungurawa, on Tuesday met with Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, the Nigerian Democratic Congress governorship candidate for the 2027 election, in a development that has intensified speculation about possible political realignments in the state.

The NNPP delegation congratulated Gwarzo on securing the NDC governorship ticket and offered prayers for a successful campaign ahead of the next general election.

The meeting comes amid growing political manoeuvring in Kano, one of Nigeria’s most influential electoral battlegrounds, where parties are already positioning themselves for the 2027 governorship contest.

According to sources within both parties, discussions centred on political developments in the state and the need for cooperation among opposition stakeholders seeking to challenge the current administration.

While no formal alliance was announced, the meeting has fuelled suggestions that the NNPP structure in Kano could eventually align with the NDC ahead of the election.

The speculation follows ongoing political tensions involving Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf and the leader of the Kwankwassiyya Movement, Rabiu Kwankwaso, whose relationship has been the subject of intense public and political scrutiny in recent months.

Political observers believe the reported disagreement has created uncertainty around Governor Yusuf’s prospects for re-election and may influence future alliances within the state’s political landscape.

A secondary highlight of Tuesday’s meeting was the public show of goodwill from NNPP leaders towards the NDC candidate, a gesture that many analysts view as significant given the competitive nature of Kano politics.

Kwankwaso, who currently serves as the vice-presidential candidate of the NNPP, has previously expressed support for efforts aimed at ensuring the NDC takes control of Kano Government House in 2027.

The former Kano governor remains one of the most influential political figures in the state, and his position is expected to play a major role in shaping political calculations ahead of the election.

Kano has historically been a decisive state in national and regional politics, often serving as a key battleground for major parties seeking electoral dominance in northern Nigeria.

With more than a year before campaigns formally gather momentum, the latest meeting signals that discussions around alliances, party structures and electoral strategies are already taking shape.

Neither the Kano State Government nor Governor Yusuf’s camp had publicly responded to the implications of the meeting as of Tuesday evening, but political watchers are expected to closely monitor developments as the race towards 2027 gradually unfolds.
