APC Aspirant Mahmud Withdraws Dramatically in Kwara Race

Kwara APC aspirant Haliru Mahmud withdraws from governorship race minutes after declaring, backing Yahaya Seriki Gambari for unity and progress

In a dramatic political development in Kwara State, All Progressives Congress governorship aspirant Haliru Dantsoho Mahmud on Thursday, April 9, 2026, in Ilorin, publicly declared his intention to contest the governorship seat only to step down minutes later in favour of fellow aspirant Yahaya Seriki Gambari.

Mahmud, who represents the Kwara North Senatorial District and is also known as Dan’iyan Kaiama, initially announced his ambition citing long standing concerns over the historical exclusion of his zone from producing a state governor.

His declaration briefly signalled a renewed push for regional equity within the state’s political landscape.

However, the moment took an unexpected turn after consultations with stakeholders led to his withdrawal from the race.

Mahmud subsequently endorsed Seriki, who hails from Kwara Central, describing him as a unifying figure with the capacity to lead the state toward inclusive development and political cohesion.

Addressing party members and supporters at an event held at an Events Centre on Old Offa Road in GRA, Ilorin, Mahmud framed his decision as a deliberate and reflective choice rather than a concession.

He emphasised that his withdrawal was rooted in the broader interest of unity and progress within the party and the state.

He stated that Kwara North had remained loyal over the years despite not having had the opportunity to produce a governor, adding that his initial ambition was driven by a desire for fairness.

His eventual decision to step aside, he explained, was guided by consultations and a belief that supporting a consensus candidate would better serve the collective interest.

Mahmud praised Seriki’s record in youth empowerment, grassroots engagement, and efforts to bridge divides across communities.

He aligned his endorsement with the broader political direction associated with President Bola Tinubu and the leadership of Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, suggesting continuity in governance priorities and party strategy.

Describing his withdrawal as a conscious act of “wisdom” and “sacrifice,” Mahmud urged supporters to rally behind Seriki, positioning the move as a step toward strengthening party unity ahead of the 2027 general elections in Nigeria.

The event drew applause from attendees, many of whom viewed the development as a significant moment in the evolving political calculations within the All Progressives Congress in Kwara State.

It also underscored ongoing efforts to balance regional representation with strategic consensus building within the party.
