NDC warns FG over Peter Obi’s safety, urging stronger security for the opposition leader ahead of the 2027 presidential election
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged the Federal Government to strengthen security around its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, warning that it would hold the government responsible if any harm comes to the former Anambra State governor ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The warning followed Obi’s recent claim that he might not be alive to contest the next presidential election, a remark that has sparked sharp political reactions.
Speaking on behalf of the party, Abdulmumin Abdulsalam, the NDC’s National Publicity Secretary, said the party was concerned about what it described as inadequate security for Obi despite his prominence in Nigerian politics.
“It is even looking like the establishment is actually not interested in his security. They have systematically ensured that he does not get adequate security protection,” Abdulsalam said.
The NDC spokesman argued that Obi, who has contested the presidency twice and attracted millions of votes, should receive security protection commensurate with his political status.
“We, as a party, will hold the Federal Government responsible if anything happens to him,” Abdulsalam added.
Abdulsalam also warned that threats against opposition politicians should be taken seriously, saying both state and non-state actors could pose risks during politically charged periods.
To support his argument, he recalled the 2015 campaign attack on former President Muhammadu Buhari in Kaduna, noting that the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan continued to provide Buhari with adequate security despite his status as the leading opposition candidate.
The NDC further referred to an alleged attack on Obi’s convoy during a visit to Edo State, saying the incident highlighted the need for enhanced protection for the former Labour Party presidential candidate and other opposition leaders.
The party called on the administration of President Bola Tinubu to provide adequate security for Obi, his running mate and other presidential candidates, arguing that safeguarding political actors is essential to protecting Nigeria’s democratic process.
The statement comes amid rising political exchanges over Obi’s recent claim that government actions were frustrating opposition figures.
On Wednesday, the All Progressives Congress (APC) dismissed the allegation, with its National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, describing Obi’s remarks as “hallucination” and insisting the ruling party remained focused on governance.
