Zamfara ADC Denies Aslam Aliyu Membership After Defection

Zamfara ADC denies Aslam Aliyu membership, insisting the former Atiku ally was never a registered member despite her defection to the APC

The Zamfara State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has rejected claims that Dr Aslam Aliyu was a member of the party, following her recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that party records do not recognise her as a registered member.

The development comes days after Aliyu, a political ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, announced her resignation from the ADC, describing the opposition party as lacking a clear and practical blueprint to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges.

Responding on Wednesday, the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Abdulhakeem Umar, said official records showed that Aliyu did not obtain a valid membership card or complete the formal registration process with the party in Zamfara State.

According to Umar, the party remains focused on strengthening its internal structures and pursuing its political objectives with members who are fully committed to its constitution and ideals.

“Our records clearly show that Dr Aslam Aliyu was neither a duly registered member of the African Democratic Congress in Zamfara State nor issued a valid membership card,” the statement said.

The party maintained that Aliyu’s decision to join the APC would have no impact on its leadership, organisational structure or day-to-day operations in Zamfara.

It further stressed that the ADC remains committed to building a disciplined and principled political platform ahead of future elections, adding that only loyal and properly registered members would shape its future.

“We also wish to make it clear that any other person who is not genuinely committed to the ideals, Constitution, and objectives of the ADC is free to follow the same path. Our focus is on building a disciplined, united, and principled political party with members who are dedicated to its progress,” Umar added.

Aliyu had earlier announced her departure from the ADC while declaring support for President Bola Tinubu and the APC.

In her resignation statement, she argued that the opposition lacked a coherent development agenda and expressed confidence that Tinubu would secure re-election in the 2027 presidential election.

The exchange highlights growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, with several politicians switching parties amid ongoing coalition talks and internal restructuring across Nigeria’s major political parties.

While Aliyu’s defection has attracted attention because of her association with Atiku Abubakar, the Zamfara ADC has sought to minimise its significance by insisting she was never formally part of its ranks.
