Amaechi Tinubu Criticism: Ex-Minister Urges Unified Opposition to Tackle Economic Hardship

Amaechi Tinubu criticism intensifies as the former Minister urges opposition forces to unite and remove President Tinubu from office, citing dire economic conditions and widespread hunger in Nigeria

Ameachi Former Minister of Transportation and two-time Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has issued a stark challenge to Nigeria’s opposition, urging them to collaborate and “kick President Bola Tinubu out of office” if the nation is to escape its intensifying economic crisis.

In a candid interview with the BBC, Amaechi, a founding member and chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), expressed profound concern over the country’s deteriorating conditions and signalled his readiness to help forge a new opposition coalition to “rescue the nation.”

“People are dying. People are starving. I myself am feeling the effects of hunger,” Amaechi stated, painting a grim picture of life under the current administration.

This forceful declaration comes shortly after the APC’s recent endorsement of Tinubu as its sole presidential candidate for 2027, a move Amaechi openly questioned.

While reiterating his loyalty to the APC, Amaechi warned that party fidelity should never override national conscience.

“If the government is failing the country, you don’t just go along because you’re in the same party. You know that’s not right,” he emphasised.

Though he refrained from explicitly confirming a 2027 presidential bid, the former minister indicated that the option “remained on the table,” adding, “Certainly, I believe I can make a meaningful contribution,” hinting at a potential continuation of his political journey.

He highlighted widespread poverty, spiralling food insecurity, and daily tragedies now pervasive across the national landscape.

Reflecting on his tenure as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Amaechi lamented the ballooning number of out-of-school children, which he noted was previously pegged at 10 million.

The economic hardship, Amaechi argued, has also exacerbated insecurity. “The Boko Haram insurgency is not just a religious crisis.

Many of those involved are driven by desperation and hunger,” he asserted, drawing a direct link between terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and a broader socioeconomic collapse.

Amaechi Tinubu criticism adds significant momentum to an emerging political realignment. Talks are already underway among key opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, as they explore the possibility of a unified front against Tinubu in 2027.

Even ex-Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, once a key Tinubu ally, has reportedly signalled interest in backing an opposition alliance.

However, as opposition forces stir, the ruling party continues to absorb defectors, prompting fears that Nigeria is drifting towards a one-party state – a scenario Amaechi warned could undermine democracy and silence dissent.

“We’re thinking that if we come together and win the election, the country will certainly witness change,” he said, suggesting an urgent need for a credible alternative to the current leadership.
