Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim made the remarks during a visit to the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, where both leaders held discussions on the state of the nation and the role of workers in sustaining democratic institutions.
He stated that Nigeria’s democratic progress has historically been shaped by the sacrifices of the labour movement, noting its influence in the struggle for independence and the end of military rule.
Olawepo-Hashim stressed that democracy risks losing its relevance if it fails to deliver improved living standards for citizens, particularly workers, describing inclusive governance as essential for long-term stability.
He warned that the marginalisation of workers could weaken public trust in democratic systems, urging political leaders to prioritise policies that produce tangible benefits for the population.
The former presidential aspirant described the current moment as critical, calling for renewed collaboration between labour leaders and political actors to strengthen accountability and deepen democratic values.
Reflecting on his personal history, Olawepo-Hashim recalled his involvement in student union activism in the 1980s, where he supported labour struggles and broader social justice movements.
He also commended the leadership of the NLC under Joe Ajaero, praising what he described as resilience in defending workers’ rights despite growing national pressures.
Olawepo-Hashim referenced international recognition of the labour movement, including the Arthur Svensson Prize for Trade Union Rights awarded to Ajaero, as evidence of its global relevance.
