Ibe died after battling an illness, with the news of his death drawing condolences from political leaders and other stakeholders in Abia State.

In a condolence statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, on Monday, Otti said he received the news of Ibe’s death with shock and sadness.

The governor described the deceased as an illustrious Abian whose contributions to education and research extended beyond Abia State.

“The Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, received with shock and sadness the news of the passing of an illustrious Abian and the APGA governorship candidate in the 2023 election, Prof. Gregory Ikechukwu Ibe, OFR,” the statement said.

Otti said the loss was particularly painful because of Ibe’s contributions to the development of education and research in Nigeria, especially in his home state.

According to the governor, he, like many other well-wishers, had hoped that the educationist and philanthropist would recover from the illness he had battled for some time.

“The Abia Chief Executive, like numerous other well-wishers, had prayed and hoped that the respected administrator and philanthropist would overcome the sickness he battled for some time. Unfortunately, he couldn’t. We cannot question God,” the statement added.
