Senator Pam Dachungyang Defects to APC Amid Plateau State Rift

Senator Pam Dachungyang leaves Action Democratic Party for APC, citing internal crises and promising better service to Plateau constituents

Senator Pam Dachungyang, representing Plateau Central, formally defected from the Action Democratic Party (ADP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday, citing prolonged internal crises and irreconcilable differences within his former party.

The Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, read Dachungyang’s defection letter during plenary, ending weeks of speculation over the lawmaker’s political future.

The document, titled Notice of Defection from the Action Democratic Party, outlined the reasons for the move and requested official recognition of his new APC membership in line with constitutional provisions.

In the letter, Dachungyang emphasised that the decision followed “extensive consultations with my constituents, political associates, and stakeholders,” and reflected his desire to align with a platform that supports good governance, inclusive development, and effective representation.

“My defection is also necessitated by irreconcilable differences and persistent internal wrangling within the Action Democratic Party, which have hindered my ability to effectively contribute to the party’s ideals and deliver quality representation to my constituents,” the senator wrote.

Dachungyang expressed confidence that the APC provides a more stable and progressive platform to pursue his legislative priorities and serve the people of Plateau State.

“I am confident that the All Progressives Congress offers a more stable and progressive platform through which I can continue to serve my constituency and the nation with renewed focus and dedication,” he said.

Political analysts note that the move strengthens the ruling party’s numbers in the Senate, consolidating APC’s influence in the upper chamber ahead of key legislative sessions and the 2027 elections.

The defection adds to a growing trend of high-profile lawmakers switching allegiances to the APC, a pattern that has reshaped Nigeria’s political landscape in recent months.
