Sowore Rejects ADC Protest, Criticises Opposition Leaders

Sowore explains his Sowore ADC protest stance, criticising opposition leaders and saying his activism is based on principle, not politics

Activist politician Omoyele Sowore has explained his decision to distance himself from the recent Occupy INEC protest organised by chieftains of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stating that his position is guided by principle rather than political alignment, highlighting his Sowore ADC protest stance during a briefing with journalists in Abuja.

The protest, which saw participation from prominent political figures including Atiku Abubakar, David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, was staged at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the delisting of a faction within the ADC.

Sowore, however, said he supports legitimate protest actions but chose not to participate in the demonstration led by the opposition figures.

He explained that his activism is rooted in consistent advocacy against perceived irregularities rather than selective political engagement.

Addressing journalists, Sowore noted that protests remain a necessary tool for accountability, adding that meaningful results cannot be achieved without civic pressure.

He maintained that his involvement in activism predates the current political disputes and is not limited to any single political group.

He further argued that some of the individuals currently leading protests were previously part of the system they now criticise, suggesting that their current positions reflect a shift in political roles rather than a change in principles.

Sowore also emphasised that while he supports collective action against perceived injustices, his approach remains independent.

He said he had publicly encouraged participation in the protest, despite choosing not to attend in person.

Criticising what he described as politically motivated activism, Sowore contrasted his approach with that of some opposition leaders, stating that his opposition is directed at systemic issues rather than electoral cycles.

He added that his engagement in public discourse is driven by a commitment to accountability across all political actors, regardless of affiliation, and not by short-term political interests.
