Tinubu Urges Nigerian Youths to Stay and Build Nation

Tinubu urges Nigerian youths to stay in Nigeria, build the economy, and reject japa trend during Democracy Day 2026 address

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, on Friday, June 12, 2026, made a strong appeal to Nigerian youths during his Democracy Day address in Abuja, urging them to remain in the country and actively contribute to national development.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said Nigeria’s future belongs to young people who choose to stay and solve national challenges rather than leave in search of opportunities abroad, in reference to the growing “japa” migration trend affecting key sectors such as technology, healthcare, and education.

Addressing the nation in his fourth Democracy Day broadcast since assuming office in May 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emphasised that national development requires commitment from citizens who are willing to build from within.

He told young Nigerians that their skills, creativity, and participation remain central to the country’s democratic and economic future, urging them to invest their talents locally.

“To our young people: Nigeria is your home and your future. Build here, code here, work here, and vote here. Every great nation was built by those who stayed to solve problems, not by those who abandoned ship,” the President said.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also stressed that democracy must deliver real economic benefits, noting that governance must translate into improved living conditions for citizens, especially the youth population.

He highlighted ongoing government initiatives, including student loan programmes, agricultural funding schemes, and support for small and medium enterprises aimed at expanding domestic opportunities and reducing unemployment.

The President further said that each generation carries a distinct responsibility in shaping the nation’s destiny, drawing historical parallels to Nigeria’s independence and democratic struggle.

“Every generation has a defining responsibility. The generation of our founding fathers secured independence. The generation of June 12 secured democracy. Our generation must secure prosperity,” he said.

The appeal comes amid sustained concerns over the emigration of young Nigerians seeking better economic prospects abroad, a trend widely referred to as “japa,” which has significantly impacted workforce availability in critical sectors.
