Turaki-led PDP assures members there is no cause for alarm after INEC invited disputed leaders, reiterating that only the court can decide party leadership

In a statement posted on the party’s official Facebook page on February 5, 2026, the PDP, through National Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong, said INEC had invited leaders of political parties as well as “some former members of our party who are claiming to head a so-called National Caretaker Committee.”
The party stressed that “there is no such provision in our constitution for such a committee to represent the PDP” and described the move as potentially tension-inducing, but emphasized that any response would be pursued through lawful channels.
The statement also criticised INEC for failing to take into account ongoing legal proceedings before the Court of Appeal, which the PDP said could substantially affect the leadership matter.
“INEC should have exercised restraint, given the pendency of the matters in the Court of Appeal, including the judgment they are relying upon,” it said.
Reaffirming its internal reform efforts, the Turaki-led PDP assured members nationwide that its Rebirth Movement remains strong and resilient.
“We can assure that INEC will not choose a leadership for our party. We urge all members to remain calm and hopeful that the Court of Appeal will soon hear and determine all cases concerning the leadership of our party,” the statement added.
