Tuggar Resigns as Foreign Minister for Bauchi Governorship Bid

Yusuf Tuggar resignation confirmed as Foreign Affairs Minister leaves office to pursue Bauchi governorship ambition ahead of 2027 elections

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has resigned from his position to pursue his governorship ambition in Bauchi State ahead of the 2027 general elections, in Abuja, Nigeria, on 30 March 2026.

Tuggar, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), reportedly submitted his resignation letter on Monday, just hours before the expiration of a presidential deadline requiring political appointees with electoral ambitions to vacate office.

The development follows a directive issued by President Bola Tinubu, instructing all members of the Federal Executive Council and other political appointees seeking elective positions to resign on or before 31 March 2026.

The directive was conveyed through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026 and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission for the 2027 election cycle.

With the resignation of Yusuf Tuggar, attention has now shifted to other serving officials expected to comply with the directive as the political landscape begins to shift ahead of party primaries.

Political observers say the resignation signals the start of a wider realignment within the federal cabinet, as more appointees are anticipated to step down in the coming days to pursue various elective offices.

The Yusuf Tuggar resignation governorship bid marks a significant political development in Bauchi State, where early positioning for the 2027 gubernatorial contest has begun to intensify within the APC.

Analysts also note that the move underscores the growing momentum among federal appointees preparing to transition from administrative roles into active electoral politics ahead of the next general elections.
