Benue APC reconciliation urged as stakeholders call on Governor Hyacinth Alia to resolve rift with SGF George Akume ahead of 2027 elections
Concerned stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State have called on Governor Hyacinth Alia to demonstrate humility and political maturity by resolving his differences with Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, in Makurdi on 26 February 2026.

In a statement signed by Mr. Tivlumun Terseer (President) and Comrade John Terngu (Secretary), the group expressed concern over ongoing tensions and “revisionist narratives” surrounding the APC’s emergence and the 2023 electoral victory in Benue.
They praised Senator Akume for his instrumental role in building, strengthening, and leading the APC to its sweeping 2023 success in the state.
“Without Senator Akume’s leadership, sacrifice, and political capital, the APC would not have recorded the sweeping victory it achieved in Benue State in 2023,” the statement read.
The appeal comes amid reports of deepening divisions within the party, including parallel ward congresses that produced conflicting executive structures across the state’s 23 local government areas.
The stakeholders also criticised remarks attributed to Vice President Kashim Shettima, describing them as “misinformed and detached from the political realities on ground in Benue,” while reaffirming loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Citing examples from other states, the group warned that unresolved disputes, such as the Rivers crisis between Governor Nyesom Wike and Siminalayi Fubara, can escalate into major setbacks.
They contrasted this with Lagos State’s consultative model under President Tinubu’s guidance.
The stakeholders cautioned that sidelining Senator Akume, a prominent North-Central leader and key institutional figure, could diminish the APC’s influence in Benue and weaken its national standing ahead of the 2027 elections.
“No governor succeeds in isolation; the 2023 victory was a collective effort. To surpass that performance in 2027, Benue APC must remain united under tested leadership,” they said.
The group urged Governor Alia to adopt a reconciliatory stance, rally around Akume, and foster unity, respect for party elders, and alignment with the presidency to consolidate the state as an APC stronghold.
They also advised those benefiting from state resources to exercise restraint, warning that continued fragmentation would advantage opposition parties.

This call for unity aligns with earlier reconciliation efforts, including those by Vice President Shettima, aimed at preventing the rift from undermining party cohesion and the APC’s electoral prospects in 2027.
